Anti-spyware

These programs are effective (though none at 100%) at removing or preventing spyware. Spyware is the primary cause of most PC problems, such as reduced performance, popups and problems receiving Windows and anti-virus updates and popups.

Run these programs in combination for the greatest effectiveness.

Anti-virus

The following are all free anti-virus programs that will work with ResNet and the Cisco Clean Access Agent. You will still need to keep these programs running at all times and keep the virus definitions current.

Note: Ensure that only one anti-virus program is installed at any given time.

Browsers

The following are all very good, standards-compliant browsers with a wealth of functionality. Any of these are superior to Internet Explorer in terms of functionality, features and security but some Web sites, including our own MCMail site (https://mcmail.manchester.edu) work best in Internet Explorer (IE).

Cisco Clean Access Agent (CAA)

This application is required in order to connect to ResNet, our network access within the residence halls. This program confirms that Windows is up-to-date and that an approved anti-virus program is installed, running and current. It does not collect any personal information about you.

Spyware will often interfere with the proper installation of Windows patches. Starting with the October 2005 round of Microsoft patches, we'll post those here for you to download and install. Be sure to reboot after each one. These are for Windows XP SP2 ONLY. To avoid the need to take this step, please ensure that you have current and active anti-spyware tools running.

Instant Messengers

While some will have a favorite IM client, such as AOL IM, we recommend a universal client. GAIM is a powerful and completely free client while Trillian is an attractive program, too. GAIM is probably better than Trillian but a more powerful Trillian Pro, available for a price, is also an option.

Media Players

There are a bunch of media players out there. RealPlayer probably provides the best coverage of the music and video formats but it's a contemptible program. iTunes is the only one capable of connecting with the ubiqutious iPod. Windows Media Player does a commendable job, for a Microsoft product. And let's not talk about Winamp, et al. There's simply too many players but we'll provide these below.

Microsoft Office 2007 Compatibility Pack

Office 2007 is now generally available. As a result, you may receive documents using the new format. In order to access these documents, you need to upgrade to Office 2007 or download the compatibility pack. Click on the Download link below to retrieve this software tool.

Wireless Clients

We provide the Odyssey wireless client so that you may connect to our secure wireless network. There's one problem with the client: it works great with our laptops because they're "registered" with our network. If you download this for your own laptop, you'll have to configure it slightly. After this installs, open the Odyssey Client Manager, choose profile and then edit the Manchester College profile. For the user, change it to MC\UserName, replacing the user name with your own Manchester College network user name. Then, when it prompts you for a password, it will use your Manchester College credentials.
NOTE: Be sure that your network card can support the WPA wireless security protocol.
